Presenting the Hal David Starlight award at the 2010 Songwriters Hall of Fame to the country beauty, the 'Your Body Is a Wonderland' singer recalls the time he got to sit down and write song with her.
Having once rumored to be more than a friend with Taylor Swift, John Mayer has made public his admiration toward the songstress. At the 2010 Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York on Thursday night, June 17, the "Your Body Is a Wonderland" hitmaker praises the country singer of being fearless in creating songs.
Before presenting the Hal David Starlight award to the "You Belong with Me" singer, the 32-year-old singer told the crowd, "I'd always ask everyone who has ever worked with her 'who is actually writing those songs?' " He continued on, "I got the chance to one night ask her. We sat down, started playing guitars, and ... she writes those songs. I've never seen a more fearless creator."
In introducing the 20-year-old, the former boyfriend of Jennifer Aniston also gushed, "She's no accident." He added, "You could put her in a time machine in any era and she would have a hit record. Don't confuse everybody loving one thing as hype. Sometimes that's everyone agreeing that it's fabulous."
Upon receiving the honor, Taylor admitted she started writing at the age of 14 as her tools to escape reality. "For me, writing was an escape from reality, where I have to say the exact right thing at the exact right time," she explained. "I'm much more likely to say 'I miss you' or 'I love you' in a song rather than in person. The only downside is the delay in saying what you want to say."
This year's Songwriters Hall of Fame inductees included Jackie DeShannon, David Foster, Al McKay, Leonard Cohen and Earth, Wind & Fire's Maurice White. Phil Collins was presented with the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award, while Simon & Garfunkel was handed the Towering Song Award for their song "Bridge Over Troubled Water".
